Razzle-Dazzle! See Sydney's Finest Frock Up for The Great Gatsby

It may have been raining last night at Sydney, but that didn't put a dampener on the glamour on show at Moore Park's Entertainment Quarter for the much anticipated premiere of The Great Gatsby.

It may have been raining last night at Sydney, but that didn't put a dampener on the glamour on show at Moore Park's Entertainment Quarter for the much anticipated premiere of The Great Gatsby. The official invitation asked "a hint of 1920s" from the A-list guest list, and deliver they did  some getting more into the theme than others. Leading ladies Carey Mulligan and Elizabeth Debicki took a more relaxed approach to the dress code, donning a Nina Ricci bustier and Lanvin trousers, and full-skirted floral Christian Dior respectively. Others, like Emma Freedman, Kerri-Anne Kennerley and Deborah Hutton, got right into character in flapper-esque dresses with plenty of sparkle.

The middle of the road approach looked the chicest to us; best exemplified by Laura Dundovic, Delta Goodrem, Kate Peck, Alice Burdeu and Jesinta Campbell who added who paid subtle tributes to the era via headpieces, antique lace, deco shapes or metallic fabrications. Good work, girls! This is one red carpet round-up you don't want to miss — step inside to zoom in on all the razzle-dazzle!

40 of the Best Shoes and Bags from Fashion Week

If you have a thing for bags and shoes, have we got a treat for you!

If you have a thing for bags and shoes, have we got a treat for you! We've painstakingly gone through our runway round-ups from Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia with a fine tooth comb to pick out the very best new season shoes and bags from the Spring/Summer offerings. Many local designers out-sourced their accessories to chain store brands this year, which is great news if you want to make these runway wheels yours!

Tony Bianco provided those killer lace-up boots for Alex Perry, as well the 'Cambridge' wheels for Camilla and Marc, the 'Dice' and 'Libby' heels at Ellery, the 'Lolita' pumps at Toni Maticevski, the 'Ashley' platforms at Rebecca Vallance and the ankle-strapped heels for Bec & Bridge. ASOS was all over the catwalks too, supplying Christopher Esber with his 'Hostage' heels, Talulah with their flirty tie-up sandals and We Are Handsome with their metallic 'Hackney' stilettos. And those fantastical Romance Was Born creations? They came courtesy of Shoes of Prey. It's time to let your fingers do the walking. . .

2013 MBFWA: Toni Maticevski

Toni Maticevski really hit us for six.

Toni Maticevski really hit us for six. Even though the local designer is known for his red carpet work, he threw both the indutry and his loyal fan base a curve ball with his stripped-back and utterly modern take on special occasion dressing. His sculptural yet minimal incarnations of classic evening-wear drew audible gasps as his ladylike troupe zig-zagged their way across the floor. A lack of frivolous adornment meant that the focus stayed on the elegant 3D form of Toni's creations; beaded peplums and collars adding clergical reverence to cocktail pieces and artfully folded neoprene and bonded jersey full-skirts making the models look like couture-worthy presents, wrapped up and tied off with fine-strapped leather belts. Red carpet regulars take note: this is the stuff that makes best dressed lists  clean, unfussy design with a generous dose of 1950s glamour — the best of both worlds.

  • Colours: Black, white, pale pink, neon melon and lipstick pink.
  • Trends: Minimalism, neoprene, bold stripes, zips, black and white and brocade.
  • Key Looks: The neon coral ball gown was a show-stopper, and deserves to be worn as soon as humanly possibly by Diane Kruger (or January Jones) to her next red carpet premiere.
  • Accessories: Tony Bianco ankle-strap pointy toed pumps in white, black and pale pink, Jordan Askill jewellery, fine strap belts wrapped twice around waists and solid bags and clutches made out of fresh blooms by Dr Cooper Studio.

2013 MBFWA: Alex Perry

Julia Nobis looked like a modern-day fairy on Alex Perry's Spring/Summer '13-'14 runway, a halo of stage-show lights creating an ethereal glow as she stalked the darkened loading dock-cum-catwalk.

Julia Nobis looked like a modern-day fairy on Alex Perry's Spring/Summer '13-'14 runway, a halo of stage-show lights creating an ethereal glow as she stalked the darkened loading dock-cum-catwalk. It might have been the start of another red carpet spectacular, however there wasn't a Perry Princess in sight. Gone were the full-skirts and layers of tulle that we've come to expect from Alex, replaced by equally spectacular but noticably downsized silhouettes. Short, ready-to-roll party dresses with high necklines and full, bell-skirt shapes started proceedings in a wave of delicate, gauzy laces. Then came the gowns! Slinky mermaid trains chased up the figure-hugging sheaths. Subtle colour-blocking, front splits, neoprene and strategically placed sheer inserts lent a sporty vibe, complimented by the use of racer-necklines and feature backs. Suiting broke up the frock-fest with razor sharp tuxedo blazers and cigarette trousers. So-sexy lace-up thigh high boots furthered the long, lean lines on show - putting the focus on that sexy three inches of thigh between the edge of the dress hem and the top of boot. It was an Alex Perry show no doubt, but not of the usual kind. And we like that.

  • Colours: Nude, black, white, marigold yellow, peach and gold.
  • Trends: Racer-necklines, front splits, sporty shapes, sheer, lace, colour-blocking and the trouser suit.
  • Key Looks: Gauzy lace party dresses, sleek and sexy gowns, schmick tailoring and anything with an exposed zip.
  • Accessories: Tony Bianco exclusively created the lace-up front/zip-up back ankle and thigh-high boots in camel and black suede.

Boy-sexy versus girl-sexy: it's the eternal sartorial debate.

Boy-sexy versus girl-sexy: it's the eternal sartorial debate. Our solution to this date-night outfit debate is to take a little bit from both camps. Temper a sexy sheer insert with a high-neckline. Wear those sky-high heels with a grey marle tee. Invest in a flirty little red dress, but make sure it's not of the spray-on variety. Valentine's Day is just one sleep away, so for last-minute inspo' I asked the ever-stylish Sugar editors to share their ideal date-night buys.
