The two most popular international music festivals, Coachella and Glastonbury, have come and gone for 2010, but luckily, Australia's just getting started with Splendour in the Grass kicking off today. We may have had to contain our jealousy at seeing celebs like Alexa Chung, Sienna Miller and Kristen Stewart enjoy the best of music and Summer, but at least we didn’t miss out on stalking their relaxed, thrown-together styles that have provided us with the perfect inspiration. Denim cut-offs, military-style jackets and a splash of print seem to be their uniform of choice. So to prepare for Splendour, check out some of the best celeb fashion we saw at Coachella and Glastonbury this year.
I wish I was at Coachella — sigh. Not only am I hanging to see some of the awesome acts on stage (Phoenix, MGMT, Gossip and Vampire Weekend!), but can you imagine the celeb spotting and outfit-drooling? I'm convinced there's no other event which draws such a fashionable crowd. I've already spotted A-listers Beyonce, Rachel Bilson, Kristen Stewart and Alexa Chung hanging out in their festival best and I can't wait to see what today's line up has in store for us.
Typically, celebs have gone for the casual-cool route of denim cut-offs and cute playsuits with the odd bit of luxe throw in. Wanna see which Hot Young Thing's rocked Coachella best so far? Take a stalk through our gallery and prepare to be insanely jealous!
Last week, we revealed the top Lady Gaga and Beyonce looks from their new Telephone video, but now I want to draw your attention to these sunglasses. If the Mickey Mouse-style frames look familiar, that's because Lady Gaga has worn them out and about recently, as well as in her Paparazzi video. They're part of the Linda Farrow X Jeremy Scott sunglasses collaboration and seem to be continuing on from the ol' bunny ears trend. Do you think these kooky shades will take off?
The latest Lady Gaga video was unveiled this week for Telephone, her single with Beyonce Knowles. If you haven't had a chance to watch it yet, it's more like a short film than a music video. At nearly ten minutes long it includes an amazing array of costumes in Gaga's typical risqué style. Beyonce also gets in to the kooky dressing and sports some serious black lipstick. Gaga was styled by Nicola Formichetti, whilst Beyonce was styled by Ty Hunter. Click through to see some of our favourite looks from the video.
So the red carpet may be over, but that doesn't mean the frock-watch ends there. Performing stars got rid of their fancy frocks and replaced them with some super fierce stage outfits behind closed doors. Some celebs went all out with their theatrical inspired costumes, while others simply replaced maxi length gowns with mini dresses, rocking out on stage in more dance-friendly lengths.
Cute, crazy and downwright kooky. Check 'em all out here.
If you like it then you shoulda put some BLING on it! Beyonce did just that tonight, rocking out some serious earrings and rings with her nude piped dress by Stephane Rolland. The mid-zip detailing gives this futuristic style a sexy edge, and the fishtail bottom balances her shape. Not many people could pull this look off, but I think Beyonce has succeeded in bringing her unique style to the Grammys this year. Thoughts?
Thank the shopping gods for Sportsgirl, eh? Although Balmain hysteria has somewhat died off lately, it's still nice to know you can get a piece of the action at a fraction of the cost. I was delighted to spy this encrusted military jacket in store recently for a reasonable $199.95. It's one of those perfect throw on pieces that won't look out of place worn with jeans and a tee (à la Beyonce) or with a more evening look thanks to its embellishment. The mid-weight fabric lends itself to those trans-seasonal "is it hot or cold" evenings, and the full sleeve ensures your whole top half is kept nice and toasty. This jacket defines power dressing, I say buy now and stash away for the cooler months ahead.
Worn by the likes of Beyonce, Rachel Bilson, Nicole Richie and Mischa Barton, Aussie label One Teaspoon has returned to the glory days of grunge with their 2010 Autumn/Winter collection. Starring leading model Emma Balfour as the face, the range welcomes an eclectic mix of roughed up denim, studded leather and military touches. Never one to stick to a standard trend, designer Jamie Blakey has also included girly touches with ruffles and stand-out dresses also featuring.
It's no wonder the label is embraced by leading department stores worldwide, including a concession store amongst Topshop's Oxford Circus store. Here's an exclusive peek into the Autumn/Winter 2010 look book to get your hearts racing a little.
Roland Mouret's cuts may be classic, but this is one designer who embraces change. It's been a big year for the designer. Not only did Victoria Beckham, Heidi Klum, and Beyonce constantly model his tailored creations, but the designer embraced the web runway show trend showing his Spring '10 collection to the masses. And, just last week, he announced his plans for menswear. But it's his minidress rainbow collection for Net-a-Porter that has everyone lusting. Funnily enough, it was Beyonce who initially inspired him to cut his mid-calf hemlines. He celebrated the endeavor with some famous friends in LA, and we had the chance to chat with him before he jetted down for the event. Here's what the fabulously tall designer explained about the collection! We're so excited about the Rainbow collection with Net-a-Porter; how did it begin? It’s a collaboration with a couple things. I tried to develop quite a private or specific relationship [with Net-a-Porter]. With Neiman Marcus, we’re doing limited edition for Neiman Marcus, where we create special colours, a special outfit for them. And at Net-a-Porter, we have created this Rainbow project because Natalie [Massenet, Chairman and Founder of Net-a-Porter] told me, "We want a minidress collection for an attitude," and I said, "OK, let’s create that collection." I am going down to LA tomorrow to launch that collection — to do a dinner there. For the rest of the interview, read more
Could there have been a more influential label this year? Balmain dominated the catwalks, red carpets, designer stores and inspired every chain store imaginable with their clever take on 80's dressing mixed with a French rock slant. Designer Christopher Decarnin took the once-elegant eveningwear label (founded by Pierre Balmain in 1945) and resurrected it with thigh-high, tough-chic, sequin-filled, rock-star glory. And don't we love him for it! A favourite amongst stars including Sienna Miller, who wore a glittery Spring 2010 number to her broadway debut this October; Beyonce, who's been seen in multiple Balmain items including a multi-coloured mini dress for the BET Awards; Blake Lively, in a full sleeved Paillette mini dress for a post Emmys soiree; Kylie Minogue, who changed into multiple Balmain looks for her Brit Awards co-hosting duties; and most recently, model Daria Werbowy in the same frock as Sienna, although she's mixed a shaggy fur coat along for the ride. Phew! The Balmain hysteria is only set to continue, with Decarnin's Spring 2010 collection offering liquid gold dresses and distressed military detailing on everything from skinny pants to jackets.
