We may be well into the swing of Summer, but there's one Winter trend that just won't quit — the sexy, dark, dangerous lip look. Dramatic description? It may well be, but a makeup craze this good deserves a bit of extra attention. There's something so mysterious and luxe about slicking dark red, purple or berry-hued colours across your lips — it's the easiest way to make like a modern femme fatale and knock the socks off anyone who stands in your way. As these celebrities beautifully exhibit, there are so many ways to interpret the trend. No matter your complexion and hair colour, there's a version in here that you can take and make your own this season. Because while we love a bright, light lip for long lunches in Summer, there's nothing quite like a vampy vibe to carry you through the balmy nights.
Dubbed a chameleon by Dominco Dolce from Dolce & Gabbana for her ability to know how "to play with her image," we've seen Scarlett Johansson pull many style switcheroos throughout her time in the spotlight. The Avengers actress is renowned for rocking a red lip as well as her ability to be both sweet and feminine and an ultimate bombshell. To celebrate her 29th birthday today, we're taking a trip down memory lane, charting her beauty looks over the years.
We're still in Victoria's Secret land and we're in the mood to look a little more sexy than usual. Those crazy manes and glossy lips have us thinking about date night, hot rollers and nude lip liner, so we thought we'd ask the POPSUGAR Australia editors' what products they turn to when they want to look and feel outrageously hot. Curious?
When you think of glamour, chances are a set of red-painted lips come to mind. And why wouldn't they? They're as much of a staple as the little black dress, and beloved by just about every celebrity you can think of. These days, red lipstick is as popular on the red carpet as it is at cocktail parties and after-work drinks — and as these models, actresses and singers show, there's no end to the slightly different iterations out there. Whether it's red with a hint of raspberry (hello, Emmy Rossum at the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards on Monday) or a strong pigment that leans toward orange (like on Amber Heard), it's bold, it's beautiful, it's womanly and it's unstoppable. Lily and Julianne both paired their lipsticks with bold, filled-in brows and black polish (Lily on her toes, Julianne on her fingers), but Lily opted for matte blush and very little liner on her eyes. Julianne, on the other hand, swiped her lipstick on with dewy skin and a thick line across her eyes. The lipstick was the focal point of both their looks, and we can almost imagine them passing the tube back and forth in front of the mirror in the ladies' room. Talk about a British invasion! Stellar red carpet regulars Kate Moss and Georgia May Jagger showed the rest of us how beauty is done right this week, but the UK pair's aesthetics couldn't have been more different. True to form, queen Kate went for a slightly messy rocker vibe — think smudged eyeliner, air-dried hair and cheekbones you could cut glass with. Other end of the spectrum: gorgeous Georgia, with her Old Hollywood curls and peach-pink pout. See why we had trouble picking a favourite? Not to be outdone, Sienna Miller, Jessica Alba and Laura Dundovic also made the cut in this week's Most Beautiful list — slide through to see them all!
To recreate this perfect pout this weekend (watch out, world!), you need to arm yourself with a good lip balm, a liner, and a red to rival Sandra's. Slather your lips in balm at least a few hours before the big event, to moisturise, plump and seal them, then line and lightly fill them with a red liner to match your lipstick colour. In this instance, we suggest using Napoleon Perdis Lip Pencil in Rococo Red ($23.80). Once your lips are lined, coat them in NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella ($39). Smooth the colour with your fingertips, ruffle your hair with your fingers, and you are ready! Too easy.
This week, the stars were out flaunting their gorgeous hair and makeup looks perfect for any soiree. From Rashida Jones' topknot and pink makeup duo to the bold lips and rose gold eyes on Aussie girl Bella Heathcote (pictured), there were plenty of beautiful styles to inspire. When we find a red lipstick we like, it's definitely a beauty moment. Wearing the classic colour is the easiest way to sharpen your beauty look, and this one from Ck One Color has become a firm favourite. Things like texture, taste, ease of application and pigment are high on our red lipstick must-have list, and Ck One Pure Color Lipstick in Vinyl ($35), ticks all the boxes. It is part of the brand's Dark Matter collection, and has a semi-matte finish with an almost golden sheen. We've eaten a three course lunch with this lipstick on, and it didn't budge. Not one bit.
