40 of the Best Shoes and Bags from Fashion Week

If you have a thing for bags and shoes, have we got a treat for you!

If you have a thing for bags and shoes, have we got a treat for you! We've painstakingly gone through our runway round-ups from Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia with a fine tooth comb to pick out the very best new season shoes and bags from the Spring/Summer offerings. Many local designers out-sourced their accessories to chain store brands this year, which is great news if you want to make these runway wheels yours!

Tony Bianco provided those killer lace-up boots for Alex Perry, as well the 'Cambridge' wheels for Camilla and Marc, the 'Dice' and 'Libby' heels at Ellery, the 'Lolita' pumps at Toni Maticevski, the 'Ashley' platforms at Rebecca Vallance and the ankle-strapped heels for Bec & Bridge. ASOS was all over the catwalks too, supplying Christopher Esber with his 'Hostage' heels, Talulah with their flirty tie-up sandals and We Are Handsome with their metallic 'Hackney' stilettos. And those fantastical Romance Was Born creations? They came courtesy of Shoes of Prey. It's time to let your fingers do the walking. . .

Fashion Week: The Beauty Trends From 2013 MBFWA

Last week at POPSUGAR Beauty, we watched hundreds of models get primped and primed for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia runways.

Last week at POPSUGAR Beauty, we watched hundreds of models get primped and primed for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia runways. We spoke to countless hair and makeup artists and watched everything from intricate braiding to lip gloss being applied to eyelids! But a week on, it's time to dissect the beauty trends. Skin was a major player in the backstage beauty stakes, with many designers opting for a more natural makeup look, instead playing up bone structure and shape with contouring. Dewy is out and matte skin is in, but makeup artists still used highlighters to get that "pop" on the runway. There's also some interesting part lines, sexy hair and ethereal eyes. Let's go!

The Buyers' View: Shopbop's Jenny & Justin Talk Fashion Week

During the madness of fashion week we were lucky enough to sit down briefly with Shopbop's delightfully upbeat buyers Jenny Fuchs and Juster Warner.

During the madness of fashion week we were lucky enough to sit down briefly with Shopbop's delightfully upbeat buyers Jenny Fuchs and Juster Warner. From the great heels-versus-flats debate, to MBFWA's new home, to their take on our local blogger pack, we had quite the chat. . .

    • What shows have you seen, and liked, so far? Jenny: We’ve seen so many! I think they’ve all been really good and as the week goes on, one is just better than the last. I think the ones for me that have stood out have been the ones that have been a little more transitional. The ones that are too Spring/Summer-ish are harder for us to buy into, but the ones that have bridged the gap with layering pieces and jackets and some leathers  I think those would be the ones that we will probably go after.
    • Do you have any favourite designers from the week? Justin: I think that there was consistently strong showing across the board. From our designer boutique, I already do buy Ellery and Dion Lee and I was very happy with them. Jenny: They were awesome!
    • Any recurring trends that you’ve spotted on the runway? Jenny: There are a lot of digital and graphic prints

So, Fashion Week, What's Up With That?

We came, we saw, we reviewed, we flopped!

We came, we saw, we reviewed, we flopped! After five days straight of covering near every show on the official (and unofficial) schedule we accumulated a) first hand knowledge of every useful amenity on site, b) instant recall of where and when every designer is showing and c) a good dose of Day Five delirium. Here are some of the funnies we noticed that we just couldn't let slide. So fashion week, tell us, what's up with that?

    • Street style snapping became a professional sport. At peak times the peacocking outside Carriageworks created so much congestion it was near impossible to fight a path inside. Multiple outfit changes in a single day, capes, spiked headpieces and underwear-as-outerwear made this a fashion fight for only the most dedicated. Even Tommy Ton looked overwhelmed.
    • We played shoe bingo with Valentino's Rockstud t-bars. Everyone had a pair! Ditto that for Tony Bianco's Kalista heels. And Céline's Luggage Tote.
    • The death knell was rung on neon. Editor-types stuck to black, black, grey, Bordeaux, and more black.
    • The lack of food (again) meant hangry, sorry, hungry hoards of journos, bloggers and editors. $25 for a pitiful salad is no one's idea of fun. Where is MissChu/Justin Hemmes/Sydney's food trucks when you need them?
    • On the food front: Schlepping to the local pub/pizza joint in your fashion week finery will illicit strange looks from the uni student crowd.
    • Soulless tunes: Most models walked to word-less, trancey, electronica beats that certainly didn't invite toe-tapping. Alice McCall and the Hello Elle show were the only two happy exceptions.

The Product a World Famous Makeup Artist Won't Leave the House Without...

Last week, we were lucky enough to meet esteemed Mac Cosmetics makeup artist, Val Garland.

Last week, we were lucky enough to meet esteemed Mac Cosmetics makeup artist, Val Garland. Val has worked on famous faces including Kate Moss and Lady Gaga, and is seen as somewhat of a visionary in the industry. Her work at the Romance Was Born show brought out "dolly daydreams" (pictured), and the lip she created at Lisa Ho she likened to murano glass. We interviewed Val backstage and there was one product in particular she raved about. Said she wouldn't leave home without it... Keep reading.

2013 MBFWA: Lisa Ho

The sun was well and truly shining for Lisa Ho this morning.

The sun was well and truly shining for Lisa Ho this morning. The Art Gallery of New South Wales is Lisa's home-ground during fashion week, so it's with anticipation that the industry flock to Sydney's Domain to await her Spring/Summer vision. Again, tailoring was key for Lisa's latest lineup — with a linear motif running throughout collection. Languid side-split maxi skirts, black and white graphic prints, bold horizontal stripes, contrast-panelled gowns and side-seamed day dresses kept the theme alive. Separates were a standout, with wearable but beatifully cut wrap-front and asymmetrical mini skirts, boxy bomber-style jackets and trousers in cropped and jodphur shapes looking at once polished but youthful. Her after-five options were buillt for glamour, with a capital G this season, with sparkle-dust strewn mermaid gowns — complete with cut-outs and sexy back strapping — obviously made with the red carpet in mind. But it was her simpler creations that caught our eye, and breath. Lisa is a master of modern tailoring and it's when her designs are stripped back to the bare bone that her talent truly shines.

  • Colours: Navy, white, tomato and cherry reds spliced together, black and metallic midnight blue.
  • Trends: Black and white, graphic prints, oversized shapes, Bermuda shorts, crop tops, minimalism, cropped trousers, asymmetrical hemlines, bold stripes, leather, and front-splits skirts.
  • Key Looks: Nifty tailored short and skirt suits, sexy one piece swimwear, panelled maxi skirts and lean gowns in block colours, chinoiserie and honeycomb graphic prints, and one fabulously dramatic black eyelash-fringed gown that positively glided down the runway.
  • Accessories: Killer thick-heeled, fine strap sandals in black and nude that created chic lattice-work on the foot, and minimalist two-strap heels in navy. Slick silver, black and gold metal bands on the upper arms and fingers, worn in multiples, leant an urban edge.

2013 MBFWA: Toni Maticevski

Toni Maticevski really hit us for six.

Toni Maticevski really hit us for six. Even though the local designer is known for his red carpet work, he threw both the indutry and his loyal fan base a curve ball with his stripped-back and utterly modern take on special occasion dressing. His sculptural yet minimal incarnations of classic evening-wear drew audible gasps as his ladylike troupe zig-zagged their way across the floor. A lack of frivolous adornment meant that the focus stayed on the elegant 3D form of Toni's creations; beaded peplums and collars adding clergical reverence to cocktail pieces and artfully folded neoprene and bonded jersey full-skirts making the models look like couture-worthy presents, wrapped up and tied off with fine-strapped leather belts. Red carpet regulars take note: this is the stuff that makes best dressed lists  clean, unfussy design with a generous dose of 1950s glamour — the best of both worlds.

  • Colours: Black, white, pale pink, neon melon and lipstick pink.
  • Trends: Minimalism, neoprene, bold stripes, zips, black and white and brocade.
  • Key Looks: The neon coral ball gown was a show-stopper, and deserves to be worn as soon as humanly possibly by Diane Kruger (or January Jones) to her next red carpet premiere.
  • Accessories: Tony Bianco ankle-strap pointy toed pumps in white, black and pale pink, Jordan Askill jewellery, fine strap belts wrapped twice around waists and solid bags and clutches made out of fresh blooms by Dr Cooper Studio.
