We were so shocked to see one Miss Ruby Rose with long hair last night at the ARIA Awards. The 2012 ARIA Awards took over the Sydney Entertainment Centre yesterday, with the biggest names in Australian music gathering to honour their peers. It was a night that many thought would belong to Melbourne rapper 360, who had the most nominations with six, but it proved to be Gotye’s night for the second year in a row after he took home album of the year, best male artist and best pop release for his album Making Mirrors. His collaborator on "Somebody That I Used to Know," New Zealand-born Kimbra, won best female artist for the second year in a row, making the duo the first artists win the awards two consecutive years in a row.
The show was filled with plenty of memorable moments. Taylor Swift performed her new single "I Knew You Were Trouble" and also hit the stage a second time to present best male artist with Richard Wilkins. Russell Brand brought his mother on stage for some of his presenting duties, while Nicki Minaj brought lots of colour after rushing to the event from her perfume launch at Myer. 360 and Gossling took to the stage for "Boys Like You" and Lupe Fiasco joined Guy Sebastian for a rendition of their chart-topping, nominated hit "Battle Scars." One Direction won best international act and thanked fans via a video message, where they held up an Australian flag. But perhaps the most poignant part of the show was when stars including Jessica Mauboy, Peter Garrett, Dan Sultan, Paul Kelly and Andrew Farriss sang "Treaty" with Yothu Yindi, who were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.
Bold, bright colour, graphic prints and pale and pretty looks were the top three trends we noticed on the ARIA Awards red carpet. Ricki-Lee Coulter, DJ Havana Brown and Sarah De Bono opted for stand-out colour, while punchy prints were the way forward for Nicki Minaj (in Camilla), Kimbra, Jesinta Campbell and Ruby Rose (via a custom-designed Romance Was Born frock). Then there was the pale and interesting brigade; Taylor Swift's romantic Elie Saab gown and Samantha Jade's sculptural number adding a little elegance to the black carpet. The world's craziest (and coolest) female rapper, Nicki Minaj, launched her first fragrance in store at Myer Sydney yesterday. Her appearance coincided with the ARIA Awards, where she presented an award and wowed the crowd with her colourful Camilla ensemble. Rocking white blonde locks both curly and poker-straight, along with punchy pastel pink lips, Nicki is something of work of art when it comes to red carpet hair and makeup. Nicki Minaj showed her love for local label Camilla last night at the 2012 ARIA Awards, stepping out in the gypsetting designer's 'Rainbow Gathering' fringed top and leggings. The punchy print and knock-your-socks-off rainbow palette are right up Nicki's sartorial alley, non? She finished her head-turning look with an embellished pair of Christian Louboutin Un Bout heels. The ARIA Awards have wrapped for another year and plenty of Australia's brightest music stars were honoured in front of their peers at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. New Zealand-born Kimbra and her "Somebody That I Used to Know" partner Gotye (real name Wally De Backer) made history by being the first musicians to win best female artist and best male artist two years in a row. In fact it proved to be Gotye's night as he scooped up three awards, including album of the year. Six time-nominated Melbourne rapper 360 took home the award for breakthrough artist release, and Matt Corby's "Brother" won the public-voted song of the year. Kimbra wowed us last year at the ARIAs in that lilac confection, and this year she's stayed true to her fanciful, couture-esque aesthetic with this feather-skirted creation by up-and-coming Sydney based designer Anna Langdon. The designer shared two sneak-peeks of her high-end design via her Facebook page just yesterday. Highly sculptural shoulders and a photo-print bodice add to the avant-garde appeal of Kimbra's red carpet ensemble. She topped off the look with a pair of Lucchesi pumps from Zomp, an embellished Jean Marie Poinot cuff from the Napoleon Perdis Life.Style store, and a glitterfied box-clutch. An Elie Saab-clad Taylor Swift arrived at the 2012 ARIA Awards to deafening screams from hundreds of fans who had waited in the hot sun for hours to catch a glimpse of singer. She quickly passed the media lining the red carpet and went straight to fans to sign autographs and take photos. Taylor is the biggest international name to grace the ARIAs this year — she'll perform and present — and there will also be appearances from Russell Brand and Nicki Minaj, who weren't able to do the red carpet. Taylor arrived in Sydney on Sunday and in the time she's been here she's done press for her new album, Red, and even fit in some shopping on Pitt St.
