It's hard to outshine a few of the hottest men in Britain, but Helen Mirren found a way. The actress stole the show in London on Sunday night when she took home the best actress award at the 59th Evening Standard Theatre Awards for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Audience. Helen was quick with the jokes while accepting her award, saying, "I'm dying for a pee, but I didn't have the five minutes to take off my Spanx." She later joined friend Maggie Smith, who won the award for icon of the year, and House of Cards star Kevin Spacey, who took home the editor's award for his contribution to British theatre, for a round of shots. She also stole a chance to share a giggle and a glass of wine with the internet's favourite celebrity, Tom Hiddleston, who was working as a presenter at the award show. Other famous faces included Damian Lewis, Jude Law and Hugh Grant.
Rooney Mara was there to support her sister, Kate Mara, on the red carpet at last night's House of Cards premiere party in NYC. Rooney wore an all-black Band of Outsiders ensemble, the same outfit she wore to a special Q&A for her upcoming film Side Effects with Jude Law yesterday. Meanwhile, Kate wore a silver Dolce & Gabbana dress, which she paired with black platform sandals.
Kate stars in the new series alongside Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, who both attended the premiere fete. The political drama follows a ruthless politician, played by Kevin, who makes plenty of enemies as he attempts to win the presidency. The series is based on the hit UK miniseries from 1990. Other celebrity guests at the premiere included Natasha Lyonne, Kim Cattrall, and newlyweds Amber Tamblyn and David Cross.
The 2013 Australian Open came to an end last night after an exciting two weeks of tennis at Melbourne Park. The tournament wrapped up with the men’s final between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, with the Serbian world no. 1 claiming the victory over his opponent. Over the past fortnight we’ve also spotted plenty of Australian and international celebrities watching the matches from VIP boxes. Female world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka, who won the women’s final on Saturday night, had a great view of the men’s match last night and sat with her boyfriend, ex-LMFAO musician Stefan "Redfoo" Gordy, who’s been one of her strongest supporters and attended all her games. US actor Kevin Spacey has been a keen spectator at most of Andy Murray’s matches because he’s a big fan of the Scottish player, while other stars who have taken in the tennis include Lara Bingle, Dannii Minogue, Manu Feildel and Andy Lee. Jennifer Aniston rocked a black leather minidress yesterday for a London photo call on behalf of Horrible Bosses. She had her main men from the movie by her side, including Kevin Spacey, Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day. Jennifer and the guys recently did press for the film back home in the States, including a junket in NYC and a premiere in LA. Jason, Charlie and Jason said Jennifer will shock fans with her raunchy role — playing against type is one of the reasons the movie did so well at the US box office. The Horrible Bosses reviews were great, too, and now fans will see if Jen can repeat her success in Europe. Jennifer has spent time between movie duties with her main man Justin Theroux. He shaved and dressed up to attend Jennifer's Walk of Fame ceremony last month, and it seems his love of leather may even have inspired her ensemble. Jason Bateman, Charlie and possibly Jason Sudeikis will be coming to Australia next month to promote the movie.
Ensemble comedies are a dime a dozen in Hollywood these days, but a roundup of famous faces doesn't always guarantee a great film. That's why I'm more than pleased with this first trailer for Horrible Bosses; it brings together an unexpected assortment of talent, and the result is hilarious. The movie centres on three buddies played by Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day, who decide to take down their respective bosses (Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell and Jennifer Aniston). And by "take down" I mean kill, with the help of hit man Jamie Foxx.
The juxtaposition of these average joes with their over-the-top employers is already amazing: Kevin plays the typical arrogant corporate jerk and Colin is practically unrecognisable as a bald bigot. Jennifer is a huge highlight stepping out of her comfort zone to play a nutty, raunchy dentist who's consistently sexually harassing her assistant (Charlie). As far as I'm concerned, this is the most promising comedy being released in the second half of the year, so watch the trailer before it hits cinemas in August when you read more.
The Oscars ceremony is all about the action on the stage, but the star-studded audience was action-packed as well! The A-list presenters and nominees were seated in the first few rows with their dates, but there was plenty of time to mingle with friends and colleagues as well. Gwyneth Paltrow wasn’t the only one attending a watch-related event in Geneva, Switzerland. Cate Blanchett and Elle Macpherson were just two of the other celebs attending the SIHH Jewellery Fair, posing for photos on vespas and switching into glam mode for the launch of the Portofino watch range. They were joined by Kevin Spacey, Lost’s Matthew Fox and The X Factor judge Ronan Keating, who all scrubbed up in their suits for the event.
The 2011 Critics' Choice Awards made for a star-studded night in Hollywood on Friday. It was a gorgeous evening when all the nominees and award season favourites hit the red carpet dressed to the nines before heading in for the big show. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner were particularly loving and affectionate throughout the night, though his movie The Town didn't take home any statues. His friend Matt Damon did accept the Joel Seigel trophy and he stepped backstage afterwards where he posed with Emily Blunt and Jimmy Kimmel. Ryan Gosling sat close by his Blue Valentine co-star Michelle Williams and the two shared an intimate chat at their table. Pregnant Natalie Portman was glowing all night long and Emma Stone was so adorable congratulating Hailee Steinfeld and complementing Andrew Garfield's Spider-man. Stay tuned as the Golden Globes start in a few hours and we'll be bringing you LIVE coverage all day!
