Adaptations of YA books are so hot right now, and Seventh Son is one of the latest book series to get the movie treatment. Based on The Spook's Apprentice (which is part of the Wardstone Chronicles series), the film introduces us to Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges), a hunter of the supernatural who has to train Tom (Ben Barnes), the seventh son of the seventh son, to kill the baddies. Chief among them are witches like Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), who's beautiful but quite evil.
The dragons, witches and sword fights make me think of half a dozen other movies that have already covered this territory, but I like the idea of Moore as a powerful witch and the fact that she's being reunited with her The Big Lebowski co-star Bridges. However, I would have liked to get a look at Game of Thrones' Kit Harington, who also has a role, but alas, he's nowhere to be seen. Seventh Son will come out on Jan. 30, 2014, but you won't have to wait so long to catch a glimpse — check out the trailer after the jump.
Some of Penélope Cruz’s movie roles probably won’t be suitable for her new baby son, Leo, for a while, but her recent turn as a Disney princess sure is! Penélope got into costume as Belle from Beauty and the Beast in the latest round of Disney Dream Portraits shot by Annie Leibovitz. She teamed up with Jeff Bridges, who took a turn as the Beast, and in the other new shots we see Olivia Wilde as the Evil Queen from Snow White (with Alec Baldwin as the Magic Mirror) and Queen Latifah as Ursula from The Little Mermaid. They join a huge group of other Hollywood heavyweights who have posed for the famed photographer, including Scarlett Johansson as Cinderella, Julianne Moore as Ariel and David Beckham as Prince Phillip from Sleeping Beauty. Step inside the gallery to see the new shots, as well as some behind-the-scenes snaps! Which is your favourite?
The Oscars ceremony is all about the action on the stage, but the star-studded audience was action-packed as well! The A-list presenters and nominees were seated in the first few rows with their dates, but there was plenty of time to mingle with friends and colleagues as well. Seriously, how cute is Hailee Steinfeld? The breakout star of True Grit and Oscar nominee headed to Berlin with her co-stars Jeff Bridges and Josh Brolin, plus their directors Joel and Ethan Coen, for a photocall and the movie’s premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. It’s been a busy and exciting time for 14-year-old Hailee, who’s walked many red carpets and awards season entrances. She recently attended the Oscar nominations luncheon and earned a Virtuosos Award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. Coming at the end of the month is the biggest red carpet of all — the Academy Awards! She’s up for the best supporting actress award but faces tough competition from The Fighter’s Melissa Leo.
When the Oscar nominees gathered for the luncheon earlier today, it wasn’t just for movie talk and catching up — they also posed for a massive A-list class photo! Seriously, imagine if you were in that pic and could hang a copy in your house. Sure beats your awkward class photo from Year Two! A giant gold Oscar statue stood in between Javier Bardem, Natalie Portman and James Franco, while Annette Bening sat on Jeff Bridges’ lap in the front row, flanked by Nicole Kidman, Jacki Weaver and Amy Adams. Some stars also took individual portraits, including Geoffrey Rush, Hailee Steinfeld, Jennifer Lawrence and Melissa Leo. Oscar nominees including Natalie Portman, Colin Firth, Jesse Eisenberg, Nicole Kidman, Hailee Steinfeld, James Franco and more gathered for the Academy Awards nominations luncheon in LA, less than a month before the big day on Feb. 17. Natalie covered her expectant belly in a blue dress and said this about what she might wear to the Oscars: “It’s certainly all about leaving space for growth.” Nicole, who was honoured in Santa Barbara over the weekend, stood out in her head-to-toe red ensemble, and Jesse spilled the beans on meeting Mark Zuckerberg at SNL, saying, “I was nervous to meet him, because I had spent now, a year and a half thinking about him . . . and then we met under circumstances that were far more anxiety producing, which was to be on national TV together.” This is just one of the many events on the awards season calendar for these stars. Up next are the BAFTA Awards, where Oscar fave The King’s Speech leads the nominations.
