Style Guide: Dressing For Graduation Day

We are thrilled to share this story from Lauren Conrad!

We are thrilled to share this story from Lauren Conrad! The TV personality, writer, designer, and style maven has started LaurenConrad.com, a social networking site that features daily posts by Lauren on all our favorite topics — fashion, beauty, food, party planning — and Lauren will be sharing her latest fashion finds with POPSUGAR Fashion every month. This week, she's giving us her tips for stylish graduation dressing.

Graduation is of course a wonderful celebration. Not only does it mark an entirely new chapter of life, but also, it's a ceremony that recognizes your hard work and achievements throughout four years of college. It's a special occasion, so it's a good idea to put a little extra effort into your look. Since I've been to many graduations, I'm pretty well versed on the topic of dressing for the occasion. And recently, I've been thinking about a few tips to help all of you upcoming graduates put your best foot forward in front of your professors, classmates, family, and friends. Here are a few things to keep in mind on the day of the ceremony . . .

  1. Choose a cute but conservative dress.
You will of course want to look cute in photos with friends on the big day, but also keep in mind that graduation is a ceremony for people's parents, grandparents, and professors. That said, don't reach for the trendiest, tightest dress in your closet. Instead, opt for a cute and conservative style that will look appropriate in front of friends and family alike. Since graduation is in the Spring, I would recommend choosing a sleeveless style — especially since those robes can get a little toasty. This little number from my Paper Crown Spring collection is an adorable option:

  3. Wear comfortable shoes.
Being comfortable on graduation day is a must. You will be walking, standing, sitting, posing, and more! If you don't want to go the sandals route, I suggest finding a pair of wedges that is comfortable to walk in. They will give you support and make your look more dressed up than flats. It's also important to remember that when you're wearing your cap and gown, the only thing people will see are your shoes, making them equally as important (if not more!) as your graduation dress. Find a pair that is classy, cute, and comfortable, like this pair by Joie.

Style Note: Translating Trends in the Workplace

The TV personality, writer, designer, and style maven has started LaurenConrad.com, a social networking site that features daily posts by Lauren on all our favorite topics — fashion, beauty, food, party planning — and Lauren will be sharing her latest fashion finds with POPSUGAR Fashion every month. This week, she's giving us her tips for taking Spring's biggest trends into the office.

So you’ve stocked your closet full of the latest spring trends (hello lace and stripes!). But now that it’s time to actually wear your new threads, you can’t figure out how to make them look office appropriate. This is a common case of confusion that affects every working girl at one time or another. That said, today I’m going to show you how to style 5 spring trends so that they can be wearable in the workplace . . .

Trend #1: Stripes
While your pinstripe shorts and tank tops might show off a little too much skin for work, there are still endless ways to wear this pattern in the office. I love the look of a black and white striped blazer paired with neutral separates. And a classic pinstripe button-down blouse can give a lackluster dress suit some flair.

Trend #2: Printed Pants
I’m having a love affair with floral and ikat denim for spring, but not all offices consider jeans part of their dress code. Put a professional twist on the trend with a pair of patterned silk pants that look more formal than jeans. I would suggest keeping within a general color scheme so that your look doesn’t come off as loud. Also, black and white patterns tend to come off a little more sophisticated than colorful ones.

Beam Blouse

Shop this top!

Design Inspiration: I am always on the search for a top that is not only a perfect everyday tee, but one that can be dressed up too. This was my solution! The Beam Blouse is a comfortable fit and can be worn anywhere. And because it is silk, it makes any look feel more pulled together compared to the average white tee.

Style Tip: The possibilities are endless! Dress it up by tucking it into a pencil skirt paired with a tailored blazer or throw it over a pair of jeans for a more casual take.

Wear It With: I personally love this top tucked into a flowy midi-length skirt, like the Netting Skirt, for a more ladylike look. Or pair it with the Serena Legging for a more edgy vibe.

How To: Wear Layers Like a Pro

This week, she's giving us the breakdown on layering in style.

Many women are afraid to layer their clothes for fear of looking bigger than they actually are. While logic would lead one to believe that this claim is true, if you've mastered the art of layering, this couldn't be further from the truth. A perfectly layered look will complement your curves and create the illusion of a more proportional silhouette.

5 Steps to a Perfectly Layered Outfit

  1. Start with a basic, lightweight top. I suggest a solid, something neutral, or striped.
  2. Add another layer such as a soft cardigan or sweater. If you're into color, this can be a great opportunity to mix in a bold pullover to give your outfit more intrigue and depth.
  3. Then add a jacket or coat. Again, I suggest a basic color: camel, black, navy, or even olive green.
  4. Next, add a scarf. It's like the frosting on a cupcake. A must!
  5. Sprinkle on your accessories (bracelets, rings, watches).

If you read my book Lauren Conrad Style, then you may already know that I have a love/hate relationship when it comes to traveling. While I love jetting off for a vacation, I can't say that I like the dozens of red-eye flights and security checks that I deal with when flying somewhere. To ease the pain of traveling, I like to keep my look simple and smart. I say smart because there are so many things you can do to cut down on potential security screenings and make the act of traveling more comfortable. Today I will be sharing my smart style tips for traveling since I figured that many of you might be making journeys in the air this holiday season . . .

My Mile-High Style Tips

  1. Keep your look simple. I like to wear mostly black when I travel. Sometimes I throw in one complementary color, such as burgundy or beige.
  2. Wear socks! Is there anything worse than forgetting to pack socks and then having to tiptoe through the security line with bare feet? I think not . . .
  3. Forget anything strappy or full of buckles. Like I said before, simplicity is key. By avoiding anything superfluous like strappy sandals and triple-buckle boots, you can cut down on the time you spend preparing for security and up your in-flight comfort factor too!

For a Casual Sunday Brunch
If you're meeting your boyfriend's parents under casual circumstances — say, a weekend brunch — you should still dress a little nicer than you normally would. It would be a bit cheeky if you showed up to brunch wearing a black mini dress and gold hoop earrings, don't you think? Instead, opt for a cowl neck sweater, skinny jeans, riding boots, and a classic purse. Classic, conservative style will win you big points in mom and dad's book.

A purse is like a woman’s personal sidekick. It’s there to give her every necessity at any given moment. And it sticks by her side no matter what. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that said “sidekick” is just as fashionable and practical as the woman who carries it. There are few shopping moments as exciting as finding that perfect bag. (Discovering a gorgeous pair of shoes is a close second.) While the true purpose of a handbag is to tote around lipstick, mints, money, and all those other necessities, it goes without saying that curating a collection of pretty purses is key.

This week, she's giving us an accessory report on daytime clutches to shop now.

While bags and satchels are lovely, there is another carryall that I'm loving as of late: the daytime clutch. Whether I'm off to an afternoon event, a lunch meeting, or even running a few errands, an oversize clutch is a simple way to give a basic look a major dose of fashionable allure. When using a clutch during daylight hours, I prefer bags in neutral tones with some texture. I especially love to carry a clutch when I know that I am going to be out all day and into the night. Clutches transition well into evening settings since they are a bit more dressed up and streamlined. They also tend to have less exposed hardware making them easy to mix and match with various outfits.

When I was in Bali I found the perfect envelope clutch. Super simple with clean lines and great texture. Perfection. I loved the clutch so much that I took my own advice and bought it in every color available (which was a total of 4 colors). I use these clutches all the time. They are a nice size, they're comfortable to hold, and they're especially great for traveling since they take up barely any space. That said I don't expect all of you to travel overseas to find your perfect clutch. There are plenty of lovely options online or even lurking in the back of your closet!

Style Guide: How to Dress For Desk to Dinner

The TV personality, writer, designer, and style maven has started LaurenConrad.com, a social networking site that features daily posts by Lauren on all of our favorite topics — fashion, beauty, food, party planning — and Lauren will be sharing her latest fashion finds with Fab every month. This week, she's showing us how to seamlessly transition from the office to off-duty.

As a young working woman I often find myself racing against the clock. Constantly. (Maybe always.) Whether I am running from the gym to the office or the office to post-work cocktails, it seems that time is never on my side (even though it seems to be for the Rolling Stones . . . go figure). Since the ticking of time is inevitable, I’ve come up with some shortcuts to maximize the free moments I rarely find in my jam-packed days. Let’s be honest here: When you’re always on the go the last thing you need slowing you down is wondering about your wardrobe. Right? Especially when you’re darting from your desk to drinks or dinner after clocking out. Here are a few surefire tips to take you from office appropriate to dinner date chic in a snap:

  1. Start with the basics. When you get dressed before work, pick a simple piece to be the backdrop for your outfit. Something with clean lines and a somewhat fitted or simple silhouette is best. Think of this item as the canvas upon which you will layer and load with interchangeable accessories and other clothing items. Personally, I love slim-fitting pencil dresses, or top and pant combinations of the same color.
  2. Related: Tuesday Ten: Fall Booties

  3. Add for the office. Layer on a sleek blazer or a relaxed cardigan to make your outfit office appropriate. Pull the look together by adding a thin belt or a prim headband and finish off your look with tights (if your office is cold) and sensible shoes (no hooker heels in the office, ladies).
  4. Pack for later. Bring along a playful pair of heels or booties, a clutch or small cross-body purse, bright lipstick, and if it’s cold — an edgy jacket.

I hope everyone enjoyed my last Ask Lauren post! Today I will be answering a question that many of you have messaged me about: breaking into the fashion industry. Here's the question:

Hi Lauren, I am currently taking a journalism class and I love all things fashion and beauty. I even have my own YouTube channel dedicated to it and a blog too. I really want to work in the fashion industry—maybe editorial or design. Do you have any tips for me?

Great question! It sounds like you are already well on your way to having a great career. Judging by your current experience I am assuming you would want to work for a fashion magazine or website. My suggestion would be to start circulating your resume and keep working on your blog and YouTube channel. You should also try and start an internship sooner rather than later. Having a few internships under your belt before making any major career decisions is crucial. I cannot stress that enough. I learned so much from my internships and they were key in getting me to where I am now. At the end of the day, it is about gaining hands on experience, which will make you more appealing to potential employers. Plus, it will be beneficial since it will help you decide what you do and do not like. There are a few ways to go about applying for an internship.

This week, she's sharing her favorite statement necklace styling tips.

I recently pinned something that says, "Simple is the new black" and I couldn’t agree more. I love to keep my look basic with a few unexpected accents. Whether it be the hint of a new silhouette such as a peplum or cutout, or an interesting color palette such as head-to-toe neutrals or brights — I like to think that the beauty is in the details. If you ask me, the best way to revamp an outfit is by adding a little flair. And when I say "flair" I mean accessories — the most important detail when it comes to putting together a cute outfit. I love piling on costume jewelry and glittery flea market finds. It's my favorite way to spruce up an otherwise simple outfit. I am particularly loving statement necklaces this year. From sparkly bibs to geometric collars, a decorative necklace is just what the fashionista pre-ordered when searching for the perfect, no-brainer outfit.

Fall in Love With . . . Cutouts

This week, she's sharing her favorite ways to wear cutouts.

Cutouts sometimes get a bad rap. And understandably so. When worn with 7-inch Lucite heels and a zebra print micro skirt, there's nothing chic about them. However, when done right, I really love the trend. I particularly love cutouts in unexpected places such as the collarbone area, the shoulders, at the hips of a modest dress or the back of a pretty tunic. In fact, cutouts were a noteworthy trend on the Spring 2012 runways. Designers including Stella McCartney, Proenza Schouler and Roland Mouret featured the scissor happy statement on their catwalks solidifying the piecemeal look as a key trend for 2012.
