Miuccia Prada impressed with her Autumn/Winter Mad Men inspired runway collection last week, but also scored bonus points on the model front. Choosing Miranda Kerr, Alessandra Ambrosio and Doutzen Kroes to walk was a first for the Italian fashion house, which usually favours hot young models minus the curves. Miuccia told The New York Times that her model choice was a reflection of the clothes: "It's normal clothes — the silhouette of the '90s, but using many different kind of models who are much more womanly."
Doutzen, who has been extremley vocal on the issue of sample sizing amongst the fashion industry, suited the full skirts and demure knee-length hemlines well, while Alessandra and Miranda's lean frames and ample busts filled out the feminine silhouettes with ease. The Angels were joined down the runway by Australian beauties Catherine McNeil and Abbey Lee Kershaw. Are you happy that international designers are finally sending different body shapes down the runway, or is this a case of too little, too late?
It's one thing choosing significantly curvy models to walk on catwalks, but the thing that throws me off a bit in this case is that the girls aren't wearing things that flatter their body shapes. It's as if Prada are celebrating in the fact that they've chosen these "bigger" models, but yet are putting these girls in clothes that could have been put on the normal, stick thin models and looked exactly the same.
