We've been not so patiently waiting for our own Sydney flagship since the UK chain store opened it's first Australian foothold in Melbourne's South Yarra back in December of last year. Well Sydneysiders, wait no more! The Gowings Building in the CBD will open its doors at 9am today, but before you join the queues, may we suggest that you do some homework? We were privy to a media tour of the four level, 1,800 square metre emporium before the doors opened — and are taking you on the VIP tour! Perhaps a quick look at the price of rent for retail here in Australia ($140,000/per annum is not unusual for a small business) and then add to that what we have to pay in wages ($22/hour week days & $$30/hour Sunday casual rates). We are well above anything paid overseas. Amazing how quickly those add up. I am not making excuses for Australian businesses, just stating the facts.

Topshop just continues to toil with my emotions. The first whispers of it replacing the long standing Slut chain Supre, brought about feelings of unrelenting hope that fashion in Australia could change from the widely accepted 'Tramp' to the confident, affordable and chic woman. Then came the onslaught of images; beautiful images of beautiful clothes that epitomized the very sense of how i wanted to dress. It created feelings of excitement and happiness. And now comes the disappointment. It's expensive. So the verdict. Topshop is: affordable? No. Fashionable? Yes. Different from other stores? Yes, it is by far crueler because Topshop offers clothing that we all want but we just can't afford. And people wonder why Australian retail is dying. It is simply because no one can afford Australian retail so they'd rather find it online. Let me give an example. Steve Madden Troopa boots retail for 250AUD in Australian stores but online from Nordstrom only $100 and even with shipping beats the Australian price. I just simply don't understand why things are more expensive in Australia considering our dollar does quite well and if conversions were to be made form American to Australian the prices of items would not be as excessive as they are in our stores. E.g. MAC, Apple, etc
