Exclusive: Eugene Souleiman on One of the Strongest Hair Trends to Come Out of NYFW

Fashion week brings a lot to the beauty table in terms of hair, makeup colour palettes and textures.

Fashion week brings a lot to the beauty table in terms of hair, makeup colour palettes and textures. Dissecting the mammoth amount of looks can be tricky, but there's always a few trends to stand tall and actually impact the way we'll wear our hair or makeup in the upcoming season. One of the hair industry's greatest minds is Wella Professionals' global creative director Eugene Souleiman, a man who speaks fluent runway hair and is known for starting said trends.

For DKNY's Fall 2013 show, Eugene tapped into the brand's timeless aesthetic for inspiration. "For this collection, Donna revisited some of her classic looks, resulting in a modern capsule collection that revolved around her iconic pieces. This got me thinking about the classic DKNY woman, and I wanted to create a hair look that embodied her spirit," says Eugene.

The result? Oh, only one of Fall's (Autumn/Winter) strongest hair trends. His "Encapsulated Hair" look is very grown-up with its sleek centre part, and more importantly, its stupidly wearable. You only need to look to (from left) DKNY, Rebecca Minkoff, Jill Stuart, and Vera Wang — as well as Derek Lam and Nicole Miller — to see the trend taking shape. Click through find out how Eugene created the look.

2013 Fall New York Fashion Week: DKNY

DKNY Fall 2013 had the city girl on its mind, with proportion plays, tough padded black pieces, and a cool palette of camel, black, white, grey, and pops of bright rose pink. The standout print of the show was an exploded leopard print that almost evoked camouflage, while pieced together neoprene and wool came together for cool outerwear. Oversize jackets topped sweater dresses, with exaggerated knit maxis making a stand for evening.

DKNY and Opening Ceremony Bring Back the '90s in a Very Real Way

The most recent case of '90s nostalgia comes courtesy of Friday's official launch of the DKNY and Opening Ceremony limited-time capsule collection.

The most recent case of '90s nostalgia comes courtesy of Friday's official launch of the DKNY and Opening Ceremony limited-time capsule collection. The retailer is re-issuing 15 of DKNY's iconic early '90s pieces, including a t-shirt printed with the NYC skyline from '92 and a hooded logo dress and a colour-blocked jumpsuit from '94. "DKNY was a pioneer of streetwear fashion in the Nineties," said Opening Ceremony co-founder Carol Lim. "We have been longtime fans of the brand and were very excited to bring back select, quintessential styles that feel fresh even today."

Lim isn't the only one feeling the pull of the '90s. We've seen a resurgence in both fashion and culture where this era is concerned, not least of which is the overarching grunge-rock plaids seen in both Phillip Lim and Dries Van Noten's Spring shows and Alexander Wang's Bon Qui Qui stunt. It may be more than a decade past, but from where we're sitting, the '90s never really left us. The throwback staples are now available in Opening Ceremony boutiques and on the website, with prices ranging from US$145 to $665. Click on to see the complete line, plus some of the better '90s style moments to make a recent reappearance.
