The reason why most things are more expensive in Australia is because Australia has distributors. Distributors are the middle man who have exclusive rights to the particular brand, buy as many items at it thinks Australia needs and then distributes them to all the retailers that stock that brand. This makes it more simple for the overseas based companies as it doesn't have to deal with every individual retailer, (who are terrible at paying their bills!!!) only one massive company. In saying all this, it really doesn't make sense that Topshop doesn't keep their prices the same around the world as they are vertical retailing. Perhaps it's because people in Australia are still confused about the value of things, which they are, despite how many of us shop online. Many Australians will still think a lower price point equals lesser quality. For example, I personally know one American based brand whom is lowering their prices (not the quality of their product!) to match their US RRP. When this brand told their Australian retailers they were shocked with the response that 80% of retailers were outraged saying people would think there was something wrong with the product. Take asos for example. The prices of their own range are cheap! yet when they launched their 'Australian exclusive collection' it was three times the price of their regular items, even though we can still buy their regular items on the same website just on the non-Australian category, makes no sense huh? - In saying this the industry is definitely changing. Illamasqua is the first to do it in the cosmetic industry and in the next year I will be very surprised if other brands don't jump on board.
Topshop just continues to toil with my emotions. The first whispers of it replacing the long standing Slut chain Supre, brought about feelings of unrelenting hope that fashion in Australia could change from the widely accepted 'Tramp' to the confident, affordable and chic woman. Then came the onslaught of images; beautiful images of beautiful clothes that epitomized the very sense of how i wanted to dress. It created feelings of excitement and happiness. And now comes the disappointment. This very slideshow reveals the expensive nature of its clothing. So the verdict. Topshop is: affordable? No. Fashionable? Yes. Different from other stores? Yes, it is by far crueler because Topshop offers clothing that we all want but we just can't afford. And people wonder why Australian retail is dying. It is simply because no one can afford Australian retail so they'd rather find it online. Let me give an example. Steve Madden Troopa boots retail for 250AUD in Australian stores but online from Nordstrom only $100 and even with shipping beats the Australian price. I just simply don't understand why things are more expensive in Australia considering our dollar does quite well and if conversions were to be made form American to Australian the prices of items would not be as excessive as they are in our stores. E.g. MAC, Apple, etc
I absolutely LOVE the fact that TOPSHOP has finally arrived in Australia, but after shopping overseas countless times at places like ZARA, H&M, F21; the fact that things need to be AFFORDABLE clearly doesn't get through to the minds of retailers in Australia. Items sold at shops here are overpriced, and I wonder why everyone is running to get their shopping done online.
