Only 2 sleeps to go! New York Fashion Week is only days away and I'm quite, (ok, ridiculoulsy) excited...can you tell? I've been looking back at last year's parades to get me in the mood and there are certainly a few key players which I can't wait to see again this year. Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler, Rodarte.. you get my drift. How about you; are there any shows which you're hanging to see most?
Don't forget to check back to FAB this week for a full roundup of all the shows, trends and celebrities from New York Fall '10 Fashion Week!
You saw Chanel Iman DJ at the Sonya Rykiel for H&M knitwear launch party last week, and now, we have the goods for you, piece by piece. The palette consists of black, yellow, hot pink, and baby pink; stripes are aplenty, rhinestone studs sparkly. Frilly dresses, classic cardis, cuffed shorts, and platform shoes round out the rest. I know this is a bit of a tease, but hopefully it'll come in handy if you're planning an overseas trip anytime soon! For your viewing pleasure...
How cute is Carey Mulligan? I'd really love to be friends with her, and more notably, steal clothes from her wardrobe. She rocked a Prada Spring 2010 printed frock to the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on the weekend, looking adorably chic in the halter style. I know the photographic print isn't for everyone, but if you look closely you'll notice it's actually a beachscape complete with sand and sunbathers. How cute! Carey's completed her look with metallic sandals instead of the lucite crystal heels used in the runway show. I dig this vibe, how about you?
Burberry has caught the Avatar bug, with plans to stream its Autumn '10 show in 3-D across four major cities worldwide. Last season, the show was shown live online to great success and many others are following their lead for London Fashion Week this month, but it's great to hear them taking it to the next level. The collection will be presented at Chelsea College of Art & Design on the 23rd February and will then be shown in New York, Paris, Tokyo and Los Angeles in customized screening spaces. Christopher Bailey told WWD, “3-D technology will bring our global audience into the London show space allowing them to see the colours and fabrics, to hear the music and to be a part of that moment when it all finally comes together.’’ Australian fans can catch the collection in the comfort of their own homes at live.burberry.com.
For its February issue, Interview magazine and photog Craig McDean got zany with Sasha Pivovarova in an editorial filled with psychedelic whimsy. In a spread dubbed My Space, Sasha looks like the ultimate artsy doll dripped in an array of bedazzled boleros, fluorescent tulle, and Prada's lusty crystal-embellished sandals. I'm smitten with her perfectly tangled hair, which comes complete with dusty pink highlights, and mannequin-like expressions. It's kinda creepy but still cool. If you look past the amazing artistic mess, you'll also find some sumptuous, soft skirts and embellished tops. Take a peek..
It's no secret that women dress for other women, and men in turn end up scratching their head in bewilderment at our strange and often ridiculous outfit choices. Two words are all it takes to back up this theory - harem pants. I read a funny article in The Daily Mail recently where a man admitted designer outfits on a woman can equal "a complete pain in the arse." Charming, I know, but this did get me thinking about the outfits and trends which women so eagerly put together, only to find get completley lost on a man. This is quite the problem if you're gearing up for a date on V-Day this weekend, so I decided to put together a little list of what to avoid when you're next preparing for date night.
Anything oversized. Yes it's comfy and can look cool in an Olsen type of way, but guys don't get it. All they think is "What's she trying to hide under there?" Chunky, towering heels. Especially if they're hard to walk in. This will only make you look like you're happy to suffer for fashion, which of course you are, but guys don't need to know that. Harem pants. Let's be real, they're not the most flattering of pants now, are they? Not to mention they'll think you bought them from the markets at Byron Bay when they're really Bassike's designer version. Jingly accessories. Charm bracelets and chandelier earrings look great, but if you sound like a Christmas tree, it's time to step away from the jewellery box. Clashing prints. Two words boys will NEVER understand, no matter how cool The Gossip Girl cast look in stripes and spots. Anything goth-inspired. You think "cool", they think "freeeeak."
I'll admit it, I use the words "statement' and "on-trend" more than I should on a day-to-day basis, and I have a tendency to proclaim things are "ridic" and "incroyable" when really, they're probably just OK. Surprisingly, these words didn't make it on the American Global Language Monitor's (GLM) Top Fashion Buzzword list, but Lady Gaga sure did, coming up as numero uno.
The GLM tracks words and phrases used on the internet, blogs and social media in relation to their frequency, contextual usage and appearance in global media outlets. The top fashion buzzwords were chosen by key fashionistas around the globe and include celebrities, trends, and common fashion terms. Scroll through the list to see if you agree.
David Brown, legendary Hollywood producer and husband of author and Cosmo editor Helen Gurley Brown, has died at the age of 93. Beginning his career as a journalist, David was often the man behind Cosmo's cheeky coverlines and helped guide Helen's career as editor-extraordinaire. The couple were married for 50 years.
Look, there's more! Hopefully the train-ride home will be a little more bearable with the new lot of Aussie glossies out this week. Up for grabs we have an Australiana-themed Madison, a man-friendly Shop Til Tou Drop, while Cosmopolitan shows off their exclusive with Nicole Richie. All so very enticing, but which will you choose?
